Title IX and Chico High Schools

TITLE IX AND CHICO HIGH SCHOOLS

THE OFFICE OF CIVIL RIGHTS (OCR), on June 22—the day before Title IX’s 40th anniversary—published a Letter of Findings in the complaint by Chico AAUW against Chico Unified School District. A summary of the letter can be found here. The district has been working with the OCR to resolve the situation.

The branch wants to commend member Cindy Wolff for her dedication to equity for the young women of Chico. She spent many hundreds of hours researching and collecting data, and she faced personal verbal attacks and even threats from the public when the complaint was first filed in October 2010. That the complaint has been upheld by this Federal agency proves that Wolff was right to “stand her ground.” We are all in her debt.

DOCUMENTS ON THIS SITE include the Title IX complaint, charts of sports participation for Chico and Pleasant Valley high schools, and key points to note. (These documents will open in either a new tab or a new browser window, depending upon your browser.)

We encourage Chico residents, especially parents, to become informed about this matter and urge public and school officials to correct the disparity.
